GPS Huddle needs your position to average it with the phones next to yours. It needs nothing else, and keeps your position for about a minute.
Who we are
GPS Huddle is made by DataGroceries in The Hague, the Netherlands. Questions about your data: jasper@datagroceries.com.
What the app sends
Only while GPS Huddle is open on your screen, every three seconds, the app sends our server:
- your position (latitude and longitude) and how accurate your phone says it is;
- a random number the app made when it was first opened, so the server can replace your previous position. It is not linked to your name, your phone, your Apple ID or any other app.
No name, no account, no contacts, no advertising identifiers. The app contains no advertising, analytics or tracking code.
What the server does with it
- It averages your position with those of the phones within 25 metres of you that reported in the last 10 seconds, and sends back that average and the number of phones.
- Those phones see your position as a dot on their map, but not who you are or your random number.
- It keeps only your latest position, and deletes it about a minute after your last report.
- To stop anyone from flooding the server, it counts the requests from each internet address per minute. Those counts are kept in memory only, for a minute.
Anonymous statistics
For the map on our home page we count, per hour, how often GPS Huddle was opened in each area of one degree by one degree (in the Netherlands about 110 by 70 km). We keep these counts. They hold no positions and no random numbers, so they cannot be traced back to you.
Server logs
The server keeps no record of requests. Error messages, which can contain an internet address, are deleted after 14 days.
Where your data goes
Our server is rented from Hetzner, in Germany. Nobody else receives your data, and we sell nothing. The map in the app is Apple Maps, which Apple provides under its own privacy policy; this website loads nothing from other sites.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you may ask what we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted. Since we keep your position for only a minute and cannot link the statistics to you, there is usually nothing left to show. Email us all the same, or complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
